AWS End User Messaging

AWS End User Messaging lets applications send and receive SMS, MMS, RCS and WhatsApp, plus push and text-to-voice, billed per message with leased numbers.

Overview

AWS End User Messaging is Amazon Web Services' messaging service for applications. Developers send and receive SMS, MMS, RCS and WhatsApp messages, push notifications and text-to-voice messages through the AWS API and console, leasing phone numbers and registering senders per country.

Key features

  • SMS and MMS on 10DLC, toll-free, short code and long code numbers, with an AI-assisted registration reviewer
  • RCS with verified brand identity, charged only when delivered
  • WhatsApp Business messaging and WhatsApp voice calling
  • Inbound messages routed to Lambda functions and Amazon Bedrock for AI replies
  • Notify, which sends templated one-time passcodes from AWS-managed numbers without your own registration
  • SMS Protect fraud filtering and phone number validation
  • Outbound text-to-voice messages from voice-enabled long codes

Pricing

Pay as you go by destination country. In the US, MMS costs $0.02 plus a $0.01 carrier fee, toll-free numbers lease for $2 a month and simulator numbers for $1. WhatsApp adds an AWS fee of $0.005 per outbound and $0.001 per inbound message to Meta's fee. The first 1,000,000 push notifications each month are free.

How it compares to Linq

AWS End User Messaging has no iMessage, so iPhone users get SMS, MMS or RCS. Linq sends iMessage with RCS and SMS fallback from managed numbers for a flat fee from $260 a month with no per-message fees; AWS bills every message plus number leases and registration fees. AWS runs WhatsApp in production, while Linq's WhatsApp is a separate beta API.

Best for

Teams already on AWS that want high-volume SMS, RCS and WhatsApp wired into Lambda and Bedrock.
