imsg-mcp

Open-source npm package that lets AI agents on a Mac read, search, export and send iMessage and SMS through Messages.app, wait for replies and transcribe voice notes.

Overview

imsg-mcp is an MIT-licensed MCP server, CLI and terminal UI for Messages on macOS, published on npm by george43g from the EQStack monorepo (github.com/george43g/EQStack). It reads the local chat.db and sends through Messages.app. Version 1.25.7 shipped on 7 October 2026; the repository was last updated on 15 October 2026.

Key features

  • 18 tools to read, search and export messages and list conversations, contacts and attachments
  • send_message with text and file attachments; SMS threads go out as SMS or MMS, iMessage threads as iMessage, and new recipients default to iMessage
  • wait_for_reply and wait_for_changes long-poll for new messages and reactions
  • check_imessage_availability for iMessage or SMS reachability
  • Voice-note transcripts and image or video captions, from Apple's on-device data and local tools first, cloud providers only if you add one
  • Export to Markdown, CSV, JSON or NDJSON

Pricing

Free software. It needs a Mac signed in to Messages, Node.js 24 or later, Full Disk Access and Automation access. Optional cloud transcription is billed by that provider.

How it compares to Linq

Linq is a managed API with its own numbers, webhooks, SDKs and iMessage features such as tapbacks and typing indicators, free for 20 contacts and $260 a month for Pro. imsg-mcp is free and uses your own Apple ID, but it has no webhooks or REST API, and its tools do not send tapbacks, typing indicators or effects.

Best for

Developers who want an agent to text people from their own Mac and wait for the answer.
