OpenMessage

Free, local-first inbox for Google Messages (SMS and RCS), WhatsApp and Signal on Mac and web, with a built-in MCP server for AI assistants.

Overview

OpenMessage is a local-first inbox for Google Messages (SMS and RCS), WhatsApp and Signal that runs on your own machine as a native macOS app, a localhost web UI and an MCP server. It pairs with your Android phone's Google Messages and links WhatsApp and Signal as companion devices, so an AI assistant can read, search and send from your own number and accounts. It is a solo project by Max Ghenis at github.com/MaxGhenis/openmessage. The LICENSE file is the Unlicense, while the README and site say MIT. The last tagged release is v0.2.9 from April 2026, with commits through October 2026.

Key features

  • MCP server over stdio, Streamable HTTP or SSE, with tools to search, send, reply in a thread, send media, send to groups, react and save drafts
  • SMS and RCS through a paired Android phone
  • Live WhatsApp and Signal links in the same inbox
  • CLI for pairing, reading, sending, scheduled sends and imports
  • Imports Google Chat, iMessage, WhatsApp and Signal history
  • All data in a local SQLite database, with no cloud account

Pricing

Free and open source. You need an Android phone with Google Messages, plus a Mac for the app or any machine that can build the Go binary.

How it compares to Linq

OpenMessage does not send or receive iMessage; it only imports iMessage history. Linq provides managed iMessage, RCS and SMS lines with webhooks and flat pricing from $260 a month on Pro. OpenMessage sends SMS and RCS from your own Android phone instead of provisioned numbers, runs only on your machine, and adds WhatsApp and Signal. It has no webhooks or hosted API; agents use its local MCP server.

Best for

Individuals who want Claude or another MCP client to work with their own texts, WhatsApp and Signal chats on their own computer.
